Sutton was originally named Billymead but it was renamed in 1812 when “Billy” became a “drunkard, bully and a nuisance.”
Today Sutton is known for Sutton Mountain and some spectacular scenery. This rural community has large farms and hundreds of acres of woodland. Sutton sets high on the top of a hill in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom with distant views of Burke Mountain. Sutton was home to the Sutton School, a private school that operated in the town.
