Vermont Conversation: ‘Don’t back down’ — Vermont’s marriage equality revolution at 25 -Civil unions grew out of a lawsuit filed by three gay and lesbian couples in 1999 who had been denied marriage licenses in Vermont. It would take until 2009 for the state to legalize same-sex marriage.
