The town of Ira in Rutland county is located in south central Vermont and was chartered in 1780 and organized in 1779. Ira is named for Ira Allen, one of Vermont’s Green Mountain Boys. Ira is the most peculiarly shaped town in the state and is bordered by West Rutland, Castleton, Poultney, Middletown Springs, Tinmouth, and Clarendon. Ira encompasses an area of 14,400 acres.
