Calais, Vermont is a town in Washington County. Calais (pronounced ‘kael – lis, similar to “palace”. Calais contains the villages of Adamant, East Calais, North Calais, Kent’s Corner, Maple Corner and Pekin. Calaise is the birthplace of Benjamin J. Wheeler, inventor or the automatic brake system used on carriages, buggies and sleighs. Calaise’s first families were the Wheelocks and Parkers in the late 18th century. Calaise once had a village called Sodom – a churchless village with several quarries. Also here is Kent Tavern Museum and Mirror Lake. Curtis Pond in Calais is a popular winter recreation spot.
