Poultney is home to Horace Greeley, founder of the New York Herald, and his co-worker, George Jones, founder of the New York Times. The town covers 50 square miles of gently rolling pastures and forest, and shares a border with Hampton, New York. One-third of Lake St. Catherine is located within the town limits, a great place for fishing, boating, and home to one of Vermont’s greatest golf courses. On the first Saturday in June, Main Street really comes alive with the Poultney Town-Wide Yard Sale. Sidewalk sales, vendors, entertainment, and bargains galore make this an event you do not want to miss. Points of interest are: Green Mountain College, the historic East Poultney Green, and the Poultney River for fishing and swimming.
