Westminster is the site of the 1775 "Westminster Massacre", one of early battles between patriots and Yorkers. The town consists of Westminster West and North Westminster - which is just west of Bellows Falls. History is rich here in Westminster. Westminster is Vermont's oldest existing town. On January 15, 1777, a group of Vermonters met in the Westminster courthouse to declare the independence of the Republic of New Connecticut , which was later renamed the Republic of Vermont.
