In 1927 flood water left nothing but bare rock in the village of Gaysville, a hamlet of Stockbridge. Most of the grantees of Stockbridge were orginally from Massachusetts. The town (Stockbridge, MASS) was named for the English town of Stockbridge, Hampshire.

The village of Gaysville gets its name from early settlers; Daniel and Jeremish Gay. Daniel Gay's son Merrick Gay served as Postmaster in the village for nearly thirty years. He was also town clerk and was elected to the Vermont Legislature. The Gay family also owned the local woolen mill.

Vermont's scenic Route 100 and Route 107 run through Stockbridge. The popular Peavine Family Restaurant is located here.

Stockbridge is located in the northwestern section of Windsor County and borders Bethel to the north, Barnard to the east, and Killington to the south. The town of Pittsfield is to the west. The White River and its tributaries cross the town.
