The City of Montpelier in Washington County is located on the shores of the Winooski River, in the Green Mountains, in north central Vermont.
Montpelier became the Vermont State Capital in 1805 and was incorporated as a city in 1895. Montpelier is a commercial, government and insurance center surrounded by farmland and granite-quarrying areas. Major manufacturers include granite, wood and plastic products and processed food. Montpelier is also home to the quarterly newspaper, The ARTS Letter.

Points of interest are the Greek Revival style State Capitol Building pictured below. The building was completed in 1859 of local granite. Also located here are Hubbard Park, Vermont College, Woodbury College, The New England Culinary Institution, and the Edward F. Knapp State Airport.
The operating Amtrak railroad station that serves the Barre-Montpelier area is actually located in Berlin, Vermont. Not the most luxurious of train stations, but quite practical and convenient for train travelers. (see photo left)
