A mostly rural and hilly area, Chittenden is just north of US Route 4 and is one of south central Vermont's largest towns in terms of area. Chitteneden encompasses more than 46,300 acres. The Chittenden Resevoir offers public access boat launch, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Chittenden was the home of Gershom Beach, who walked more than 60 miles in 24 hours to round up the Green Mountain Boys back in 1775.
