KINGSLAND BAY - a place of beauty

Sitting on the grassy lawn I watch a canoe slide into the glistening water,
the young couple unaware of my presence.
The dark, blue-green water lapping against the rocky shore waits to take them to new adventures.

I thought, what delight for them to be out there on that sparkling lake without a care
in the world, but each other.
The sun shone down caressing and warming
their skin, now brown from many such days.

The gentle wind making a slight breeze
causes the many colored flags of nearby boats anchored, to fly.
The American flag just there on the shore
gives a sudden burst hailing its stars and stripes.

In the little cove nearby, two Canada geese
herd their babies under a rocky ledge shelter,
away from a motorboat speeding by.
Overhead more ducks fly, squawking.

A rustling sound occurs.
Behind me a little brown garter snake
slithers into dry brown leaves,
just his tailend showing.

Across the cove a sailing crew readies their boat moving it away from its mooring.
It motors out of the little bay to the broad lake where the wind has begun to blow.

Walking along the cliff edge I follow the wooded trail around the point to view the broad lake.
There in the undergrowth a red fox spies me
and looks directly, with no fear, into my eyes.

This place of natural beauty has its history.
This land, once privately owned, the stone structure a family home and an Inn for travelers.
A ferry to New York was provided.
A place of housing for militia during the war of 1812;
Then a monastic retreat;
And later a school for girls studying French;
Kingsland Bay, on the shores of Lake Champlain is now a Vermont State Park.
