Late Walk in Newfane

It's Late in the day.  The sun
is sinking faster than my heart.
Can we get in this one, short hike?
The woods are quiet, warm air
of May growing pleasantly cooler.

How tall an stately the white pines!
The ground thickly peopled with innumerable
dry beech leaves, tiny reviving ferns, 
struggling fiddleheads, baby raspberry bushes,
and inconspicuous prepubescent viburnum
just starting to leaf out.
At last we're there!  The canyon'd stream
splashing in waterfall after miniature waterfall
like an elegant dancer in a thousand spins.
How restful this isolated stream,
the comfortable boulders,
your comfortable shoulders.
But we must hurry home!
Our blue-eyed friend
is putting out the light.
