A Vermont Journey
I wrote this poem "A Vermont Journey", as a gift to my sisters in November 1996
after the four sisters had spent a week together in our childhood vacation
place - Long Point on Lake Champlain

A VERMONT JOURNEY!
A Vermont journey with sisters
Barbara, Jeanne, Bobbie, the three,
This incredible week, for them and me.
Driving through rain and stormy winds galore
Our anticipation bursting all the more.
Arriving Sunday, October twenty,
We began a reunion of fun a-plenty.
Each day filled with adventure a new
But reminiscent of times gone by
The moments of stress were but a few.
Though much older, we did not let time fly.
Closer and closer our emotions made mend,
Old hurts and fears that tears could transcend.
Surrounded by mountains
The Green of Vermont, the Aderondacks of New York
Colored brilliantly for the season of fall,
We canoed just once... it was too small.
Rowing a boat each day more fit for four,
The water moved calm and peaceful.
Then waves sudden and white capped,
We watched them soar,
Beaching the boat so to have more.
Driving excursions along route # 7
From Vergennes to Ferrisburg, and on to Charlotte...
Across on the ferry to Essex, New York
Meandering south to Ticondaroga,
A little ferry took us back to our Vermont spot.
Walking around Long Point
Looking out across to the Dean's islands,
We visited long ago cottage haunts.
We cooked hot dogs on a fire between the rocks,
Eating together once more on that special rocky point.
We marveled at how things seemed the same
Inspite of all the years of change.
Seeing friends of past years,
Who, too, have grown older.
But in this beautiful place
Are no less the bolder.
A ride to Camel's Hump near Barrow's cottage
Brought us treasured thoughts of mountain top heights,
We made, almost, without a fight.
In the evenings each took a turn at cooking,
Reading books by the fire so bright.
We often played cards with no one looking,
Listening to music to our hearts delight.
We lounged in pajamas and talked of old times
Events of years gone, but oh, so cherished!
Crying tears of some sadness and often
Laughter from funny behavior,
We sang joyous hymns of our faith and 'our Savior.'
The week's end came too soon, but we did not despair
For one more adventure we would share...
Driving through the mountains, first green and
Then white, from Vermont to New Hampshire;
Trails At Franconia Notch, Echo Lake, and the flume so awesome.
Each sister made a vow we'd do it again.
This fantastic time together,
Of renting a cottage on Lake Champlain,
Once more to claim, Vermont again.
Thank you Sisters!
Lovingly, Margaret

And of course we did.
