When I informed Innkeeper Kevin O'Donnell that we would be doing a feature story on The Old Tavern at Grafton, I asked him the usual questions...
...Would you like me to highlight Chef Tom Bivins' healthy gourmet cuisine, prepared using fresh herbs from his own garden, local farm produce and diary products?
...Or, perhaps do an overview of the upcoming Ferrari-Carano Vineyards Wine and Food Weekend?
...Or, what about detailing the Old Tavern's fully renovated and historically charming 35 guests rooms, 2 cottages, and 6 guest houses?
His magnanimous answer emanated esteem for Old Tavern owner and preservation alliance, The Windham Foundation, in suggesting our focus be on their contribution to the Village of Grafton, Vermont.
The Old Tavern at Grafton was restored by The Windham Foundation in 1965 with painstaking historical accuracy and the addition of modern plumbing, heating, and safety features. When you enter the Inn, you step back in time to the era of hand-hewn beams and wide pine flooring with pewter and brass accoutrements. Today, the Old Tavern looks much the same as in the days of old when visited by Daniel Webster, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ulysses S. grant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rudyard Kipling, and Henry David Thoreau.
Likewise, a visit to the Grafton Village Cheese Company, seen below in the days of old and as it is today, will add a uniquely historic complement to your stay at the Old Tavern.

Visit The Old Tavern for lodging and dining experience reminiscent of a bygone era.
