History of Vermont Lottery
The state of Vermont joined with Maine and New Hampshire to form Tri-State Megabucks in 1985, but the Vermont Lottery was running its own Pick 3 numbers game since 1980.
These are all very recent compared to the lotteries that were run earlier in the history of the country. When funds were needed for construction or when capital was needed for funding events, lotteries were held. These first lotteries were much smaller than the Tri-State Megabucks and nearly microscopic compared to the phenomenon of Powerball, but they served a purpose.
Through the later times of the 19th and the start of the 20th centuries, gambling was considered to be something that was rather shady. It would seem that at this time, those who benefited from the use of raffles and lotteries were ready to turn their backs on the financial tool that was so easily used to start our country.
For years, the state of Vermont went without legalized gambling and was active in the prohibition of alcohol.
Recently, Vermont has become one of the many states of the union that has benefited from a State Lottery Commission. A percentage of the funds that the Vermont Lottery Commission raises goes back to the state for educational funding. Vermont Lottery dollars are also used to hire staff and support a Vermont Lottery advertising campaign.
With recent developments of new games such as Instant Games ("Scratch Tickets"), MegaCash, MegaBucks, and the continuation of the original Pick 3 and Pick 4 daily numbers game, the Vermont Lottery has something for just about everyone of legal age to responsibly play.
