How to Choose a Country Inn

inn vacations, inn tips, country inns, inn vacation, inn vacation tips, choosing a country inn, country inn vacations, country inn, us inns, US inn vacations,The seasoned Inn and B&B traveler shuns the large and impersonal hotel chains in favor of the personalized services and home-like atmosphere of the country inn or Bed and Breakfast. Vermont Inns and B&Bs offer a charming uniqueness often lacking in today's homogenized society of super-conglomerates. Many are owner operated and committed to exceeding the expectations of their guests.

Planning Your Inn or B&B Vacation

Country Inns/B&Bs/B&Bs tend to vary in style, atmosphere, and the amenities that are offered.  A little pre-planning makes for a lot of great vacationing experiences.  You should always determine exactly what type of amenities are important to you before making reservations (seclusion, convenience, air conditioning, smoking policy, dining options, activities, liquor license, health club, etc.). Write down all pertinent questions and inquire specifically when you contact your choices.

Many Styles of Inns and B&Bs

Inn/B&B accommodations cover a wide range of lodging styles, from quaint country hideaways and historic Victorian-style guest houses, to thriving mid-town colonial mansions. They can offer an economical alternative to large hotels and motels, yet still offer luxurious lodging complemented by personal attention and traditional Vermont hospitality. The personalized service and innkeeper's knowledge of the local attractions are just two reasons why many travelers insist on acquiring Inn/B&B accommodations.

Some inns offer breakfast to their guests (thus the term Bed & Breakfast) and dinner to guests and the public, while others may not have dining facilities on the premises.  The Inn/B&B experience is exceptional - every guest room tells its own story in its unique shape, size, and decor.  The public areas are usually well adorned with antiques and eclectic furnishings that tend to have a tale or two behind them, as well.

Selecting an Inn or B&B

The links in this website provide descriptions of various Inns/B&Bs, with a focus on the most important amenities available to you. Contact those that appeal to you via their e-mail link in our website or by telephone.  Innkeepers are happy to answer all your questions in an effort to provide the best vacation experience possible.

Do you need a modem or in-room telephone? Would you like to be within walking distance to shops, golf courses, exercise facilities, skiing, etc.? What about sleeping quarters and bed sizes?  Some Inns/B&Bs offer king and queen size beds, while others may limit their offer to double or single beds. Remember, unlike hotels and most motels, many Inns/B&Bs do not have a telephone or television in every room. Private baths, Jacuzzis or hot tubs are generally the rule, but some of the older properties offer shared bathroom facilities.

Inn B&B Dining & Food Service

Breakfasts at B&Bs can also vary widely. Many offer hearty, home-cooked breakfasts, while others serve a simpler fare limited to coffee and danish, or a Continental Breakfast of cereals, fruits, and juices. B&Bs do not serve lunch or dinner, but many inns do offer two, or even three meals a day.  Chef-owned Inns/B&Bs are often renowned for their fine gourmet cuisine (visit Chef-owned Inns of Vermont).  Many do not have a liquor license, or are limited to serving beer and wine.  Others permit guests to bring their own spirits, and will offer to mix and serve at your request.

Checking-In, Special Services, & Parking

Inquire about special services that may be available on premises, such as bicycle or boat rentals, shuttle service, valet parking, board games, swimming or fishing areas, handicap accessibility, and special events or activities. Check-in and check-out times should be arranged in advance.  Inns/B&Bs do not generally offer a 24-hour front desk attendant, but with advance notice the innkeepers will usually accommodate late arrivals. Some Inns/B&Bs have limited off-street parking and may have space for only one vehicle per room. There is usually no parking fee, but do ask in advance.

Cancellation Policies, Pets, & Smoking

Since Inns/B&Bs usually offer only a dozen rooms or less, a 'no-show' can mean losing a significant percentage of their total business.  Therefore, many innkeepers will charge you for not canceling a reservation, and will sometimes impose a late cancellation fee.  Inns/B&Bs do not overbook, so be considerate and notify the establishment as soon as your travel plans change.

As a rule, pets are not accommodated by innkeepers, although they are happy to refer you to a local kennel.  Companion pets, such as seeing-eye dogs, will be accommodated whenever possible. Some inns do welcome cats, dogs, and other pets. Check the Pet Friendly lodging section of Vermont Living for suggestions.

Many Inns/B&Bs are now 'smoke-free establishments', so do not assume you will be permitted to enjoy your favorite tobacco product on the premises.  Likewise, the non-smoker should inquire about the smoking policy in order to avoid encountering an unpleasant experience.

Rates

The rates at B&Bs generally range from $50 to $300 per night, although some luxurious B&B rates can be substantially higher. Rates are based on supply and demand, which means the higher the occupancy, the higher the rate.  The highest rates will be found during Vermont's renowned foliage season from early to mid-October, while the lowest rates are usually available during April and November. Variables affecting rates include midweek or weekend stays, peak seasons, holiday periods, and off-seasons.  Other variables effecting rates include the room and bed size, location (does it have a view), and accoutrements. Many Inns/B&Bs have minimum stay requirements, especially during peak seasons and holiday periods. Always ask about 'packages', which can substantially reduce the overall cost of a vacation when they include skiing or golfing, etc.

Summary

No matter where you stay in Vermont, you are sure to enjoy a unique experience and discover that an Inn/B&B vacation will provide the personalized service, homey surroundings, and attention to detail so often lacking in other lodging options. The Inn/B&B experience offers a refreshing change from the large hotel chains, and makes for pleasant, long-lasting vacation memories.
