In 1993, Mrs. Fritz Wiessner and her children entrusted Wiessner Woods to the Stowe Land Trust in memory of husband and father, Fritz Wiessner - a celebrated adventurer and ardent conservationist. The Stowe Land Trust has since put every effort into preserving its natural state for public enjoyment.
The Wiessner family enjoyed many hikes through Wiessner Woods, where woodland flora and fauna abound. In accordance with Mrs. Wiessner's wishes, Stowe Land Trust established minimal impact trails, and Stowe residents donated bridges, benches, and signage. Wiessner Woods is maintained on a volunteer basis by Stowe Land Trust members, school children, and friends who periodically clear fallen branches, repair winter damage, and install needed amenities. Stowe Land Trust monitors the use and condition of the Woods, imposing restrictions when necessary to avoid over-use and an adverse impact on flora and fauna.
Wildlife commonly seen in Wiessner Woods include partridge, thrush, grouse, falcons, and owls, as well as deer, fox, and an occasional bear or moose. A walk in Wiessner Woods is sure to provide a rejuvenating experience for the avid hiker or the occasional ambler.
Directions: From Stowe Village, take Route 108 (The Mountain Road) 3.5 miles to Edson Hill Road. Turn right on Edson Hill Road, pass the entrance to Stowehof Inn and take the next drive on your right. Park on your left in the Wiessner Woods parking lot, and follow the signs to the Trailhead.
